Jono
covers: Ringing Bells
|
My name is Jonathan, sometimes known as Jono. I have a background in classical piano and all-around-everyday guitar (influenced somewhat by Jason Martin). Ronnie's work has certainly influenced my taste in popular music; Joy Electric gave me an appreciation for melody in music and also for pleasing chord changes. JE also showed me that synthesizers didn't have to be used only for techno music! Lyrically, it's very easy for me to relate to one of the common themes of Ronnie's songs: that of the longing for youth, or younger times. I chose to record "Ringing Bells" simply because it's one of my favorite Joy Electric songs. The descending melody is one of the most memorable ones Ronnie has written (for me) and that bassline never fails to thrill me. I arranged this song for the guitar because Ronnie's songs are so well crafted they don't rely on the synthesizer medium, but can exist just as well played on other instruments.
Here are the recording notes, because I am the Sort of Person that Takes These Kinds of Notes. Played on an Epiphone PR7E. Recorded in my living room with an Audio Technica AT2021 and a Tascam Portastudio 788 (not to mention a couple of mic cables). Rhythm track, main melody, and solo recorded 26 November. Vocal attempt recorded and discarded 27 November. Vocal melody and extra chorus harmony recorded 29 November.
